This release contains all existing recordings by a formation of Art Blakey?s Jazz Messengers that would only last for a single year! The group consisted of the leader plus Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, and Doug Watkins. Among the materials included here are the complete contents of the LPs The Jazz Messengers (Columbia CL 897) and Byrd?s Eye View (Transition TRLP 4), plus extra tunes and alternate takes from the sessions as well as six rare tracks presenting the Messengers backing Dutch singer Rita Reys. As a bonus, a different version of Mobley?s ?Hank?s Tune? by a very similar formation (with Art Taylor replacing Blakey).
